Islamic Eco-Theology for Planetary Health Literacy among Vulnerable Muslim Communities: A Tawḥīdic Model
Abstract
The planetary health crisis profoundly affects people across diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and religious backgrounds. While various environmental strategies exist, they remain predominantly focused on scientific dimensions, often overlooking spiritual elements and religious beliefs as a core driver of sustainability. Therefore, this study aims to develop the Tawḥīdic Planetary Health Literacy (TPHL) model, which integrates the existing Planetary Health (PH) framework with Islamic spiritual dimensions as to empower vulnerable Muslim communities. This research adopts a conceptual-normative synthesis approach, involving a review of literature on Planetary Health and Islamic ecotheology. The findings demonstrate that tawḥīd al-Rubūbiyyah, tawḥīd al-Ulūhiyyah, and tawḥīd al-Asmā’ wa al-Ṣifāt strengthen the agenda by providing ontological awareness, instilling intrinsic motivation, and fostering an ecological character. The integration of tawḥīd dimensions and planetary health literacy promotes sustainable actions rooted in a spiritual consciousness concerning environmental stewardship and the responsibility of khalīfah (vicegerency). Consequently, the TPHL model not only offers a holistic alternative strategy for realizing the Planetary Health agenda but also strengthens as a source for strengthening the resilience of vulnerable Muslim communities in facing the impacts of natural disasters.
